Benue Governor Pardons 72 Prisoners In Makurdi Prison

Governor Samuel Ortom today gave relief to 74 persons in Makurdi prison for their inability to pay for their various fines and also granted amnesty to 38 others ranging from death penalty which 16 were released, 14 had their sentences reduced while 8 others had their death sentences commuted to life sentenced.

The gesture is in line with section 212 of the Constitution of Nigeria and to mark the National day, Nigeria at 55.

The Governor who urged the inmates to desist from their old behaviour, called on them to use their prison experience and the skills acquired during their stay to develop themselves and their family members and should also serve as gents
of change.

Other beneficiaries of the amnesty were from Jos and Kaduna prisons. Government also provided transport stipends to enable those to be released get to their destinations.
