Governor Ambode Approves N11 Billon To Pay Pensioners

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has has approved the release of N11 billion for the payment of all backlogs of pensioners in the State Service.

The Permanent Secretary of Teachers’ Establishment and Pensions Office, TEPO, Mrs. Sewanu Amosu disclosed this at the ongoing Biometric Verification Exercise for Teacher-Pensioners in the State Teaching Service.

According to her, the exercise is to ascertain the number of pensioners on the payroll of the State Government to avoid multiple payments of pensions and gratuities.

The on-going verification exercise which is taking place simultaneously in seven different locations across the state, started on Wednesday 4th November and will end on 11th November. It will cover the six Education Districts in the State.

Amosu said that the exercise would also enable the government to determine the exact amount to be paid to pensioners on Old Pension Scheme, just as it would also afford it the opportunity to eliminate ghost pensioners on its payroll.

According to her, the exercise will help to update the pensioners’ records and capture their finger print for ease of payments through E-system, adding that the era of pensioners going through stress to obtain their entitlements after years of selfless service is over.

For the ease of the exercise, TEPO is partnering with Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA), the agency that is saddled with the responsibility of registering residents for planning purpose.

The present Administration under the leadership of His Excellency, Governor Ambode has pledged its commitment to ensure the wellbeing of pensioners through prompt payment of their entitlements.

Many of the pensioners who spoke on the exercise commended the government for the gesture, but urged it to look into the aspect of their pensions that has been stagnated for long.
